suke
Any of you run windows 64 bit. I see a lot of the games now are just for 64 bit. Is there any gains from having it apart from being able to play those games? Can you run everything else as normal?
philmein
you can use more ram with 64bit there's a limit on 32 bit windows
mardanpet
64bit windows used to be an issue back in the day with XP. This was mainly due to lack of suitable drivers than anything else. Memory limits are the main thing now, with win7 32bit you will get under 4gb of useable ram. 64bit in home edition is limited to 8, or maybe 16gb, the pro version limited to 192gb
Snuffs99
Yeah as stated memory is the key issue but there re some programs that simply wont run on 32bit like newest photoshop fir instance neds min 4Gb ram and 64bit OS to run. tbh i'd say 32bit is prety much on its way out now, most newer notbooks/laptops tend to have 64bit pre installed etc, again due to ram issues. mitchb
Just check as this tweaked my interest. Mines is 64 bit but couldn't have told you that. Makes sense above though as I have 8gb of ram, 7.78gb usable
chizh
Don't think I've ever had a 32-bit program that hasn't installed on my Windows setup. Most authors have both 32 and 64 bit of their programs nowadays and both are likely to install on a 64bit machine. You will find the Program Files folder has the 64bit stuff and Program Files (x86) for 32bit installs. Some imstallers might install both. I just checked my own folders and my security software has installed to the (x86) folder by default. As mentioned above, older hardware may not have a 64bit driver but sometimes you can use a generic 64bit driver for basic function. Can I run 32-bit programs on a 64-bit computer? Most programs designed for the 32-bit version of Windows will work on the 64-bit version of Windows. Notable exceptions are many antivirus programs. Device drivers designed for the 32-bit version of Windows don't work on computers running a 64-bit version of Windows. If you're trying to install a printer or other device that only has 32-bit drivers available, it won't work correctly on a 64-bit version of Windows. To learn how to check for drivers, see Update a driver for hardware that isn't working properly or go to the device manufacturer's website. You can also get information about drivers by going to the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor webpage.

Rusty
Yes you'll have to reinstall, can't upgrade x86 to x64.
Minty
I just wiped my laptop and reinstalled Windows 7 x32 again, as would have to change printer drivers etc. Also still not going to Windows 10!

You should take the risk. Your drivers will be there and the system will perform better Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
suke
Just installed windows 7 64 bit and then the little window at the bottom finally said windows 10 was available for me so downloaded and installed that. Its a lot different and still trying to find a lot of things that were easy in windows 7. I guess they are all there but just need time to get accustomed to windows

Rigout
I've got Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit with 16gb of RAM. It certainly seems to work much better.
suke
As jakdos says I have been using windows 19 now for about a fortnight and just about got my head round it. Still not sure what antivirus.
