Flight Radar 24 system

Not really sure if this fits in here but it is a bespoke antenna system.

I've been a user of FlightRadar24 for a number of years and get a bit pissed off with the auto log out after a preset time.

I looked at the subscription costs but thought they were too high for the amount of time I use it.

So looked at a plan B. If you provide data to the system then you get a buisness level membership account for free.

So I grabbed a cheapo USB DVB-T receiver for around £8 and purchased a custom 1090 MHz antenna for around £20,

downladed the free software and bobs your uncle.

You do need a PC on 24/7 which I already had. So no extra costs for me there.

As I'm in visual distance of both the main westbound Heathrow corridor and also close to SEN I tend to have over 100 planes on the go at any time.

Not looked overnight but I guess the number drops.

I'm averaging solid signals out to 150 nmiles  and can reach to around 250 nmiles.

I believe it is possible to split the feed and fire data out to other systems, not investigated that yet.

Sounds good, but why you would want to use it is beyond me!?

The only time I use it is when I have a student on test, so I can keep up with the examiners profile for the test, (where he goes what altitude etc)

I like to keep an eye on the flights around me plus I monitor the incoming flight for the plane that I'll be flying out on.

It's just the inner geek in me :)

Ahh yes if your actually going on holiday etc, can totally understand it.

If your just being geeky, why not get a scanner, and listen to the aircraft your also watching. All frequencies are published. You would easily get the station in the air, but may struggle to listen to the ground station.

I can help with local frequencies if you need them?
