Open Whisper Systems is finally making its encrypted messaging app for Chrome available to everyone, after it launched in a closed beta, invitation-only program a few months ago.

Signal is now available via the Chrome Web Store and you'll need an Android device with the dedicated app installed in order to access it. You begin by registering with your phone number and then you're able to message your contacts with super secure, end-to-end encryption for free.

You're able to send everything you'd expect from a messaging app, like text, audio, video and photos. But some crucial features are missing, like being able to start a group chat or SMS support and there's also no iOS option available just yet.

But if you're concerned about privacy and you're looking for a free, super secure solution it's definitely worth trying out. And for those wondering where they've heard of Signal before, this is the desktop version of Edward Snowden’s favoured end-to-end messaging system.
