The terrifying new mobile phone scam that leaves you with a £300 bill

Mobile customers are falling victim to a terrifying new scam that leaves them with a giant bill for a phone call they insist they never made.

Some victims are being hit with charges of more than £300 for mystery calls lasting up to 12 hours.

But they only find out about the calls when they get an itemised bill or receive a text message saying their phone is being blocked due to high usage.

In every case seen by Money Mail, the scam begins with the customer receiving a call from an unfamiliar number that starts with 0845 or 0843.

The customer never answers — the call typically lasts just a fraction of a second — and it's recorded on their mobile handset as a missed call.

how can your phone get "hacked" simply by getting a missed call?

or even a call for that matter?

also theres not many phones out there that have a battery life for a 12 hour call.

dont know if its the way the story is being told but this has a snopes article written all over it if you know what i mean.

I had heard of one recently where you answer the phone and it auto connects you to a preset phone line which is run at £100 per minute, a lot of calls are min 1 minute so you get hammered for charges.

Not sure how true but who knows these days

Not sure thats true tbh mate, afaik premium rate lines etc are all set by ofcom etc so you cant have a line costing £100/min, just not possible in the UK. This latest "scam" makes out your on the phone for a few hours etc hence why the bill is inflated (£1.50/min x 60 =£90) but i'm still dubious myself and await the snopes thread confirming its bollox.

Just Vodafone though? Luckily i'm not with them but from now on i'll start checking my bills, normally they just get thrown in a draw unopened. I think in the past some of these scams have involved calls to overseas premium numbers which is why they are so high. International charges and higher charges for premium lines.
