NoOne
Anyone know anything about cctv. I just want a simple good quality setup mainly for monitoring from the front of my property down the drive to keep a watch on my cars. I only need a distance of approx 15 meters max. Plus there is a streetlamp directly outside so Im not sure if I need night vision or not. I suppose while Im at it I was considering one cam at the back of my house. Again 15 meters would be enough. I was looking at this website for inspiration. Thing is Ive no idea what I need. Ive got a home network and nas drive. Im not sure if I can use that as part of the setup or not. xxx.cctvkits.co.uk/hd-ip-cctv/hd-ip-cctv-kits/1-2-camera-ip-kits.html
Boycie
I'd take a look on Ebay PTZ ip camera as most of these now will work through your TV with minimal setup. Also come with IOS & Android apps so no flipping your favorite TV show over just pull your phone out and check whats going on outside. http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/PTZ-Pan-Tilt-Zoom-CCTV-Cameras/66738/bn_443573/i.html
hoponbaby
I've had a sumvision kit from Maplins for a few years now. Dedicated HDD, ios app etc camera's are ok although there is far better available now. Would certainly say go for the dedicated unit rather than using PC though as it's turn on and forget about it. The streetlight won't be good enough at night for a decent picture, I would also suggest a PIR floodlight as the difference it makes to the camera quality is massive. goldringers
I have a 4 camera setup with infra night vision. Were lucky as there's a street light right nearby and it illuminates the area were the car is + I have a dusk till dawn low level LED light on the back which is cheap as chips to run. It wasn't a dear do , cost about £150 at the time on offer. The problem was, the shit camera's that came with the kit, they was crap to say the least. I ended up keeping 2 but changed 2 for better quality ones. It all depends the distance you want to capture to and your budget as a top end system can run in to hundreds if not thousands. Mine records in a loop to the 500gb hard drive so it's left to run 24/7 and does a job. I wouldn't mind one PTZ for the front if you drop on one or anyone else does at a decent price let me know, I don't mind ordering direct from China ALIEXPRESS etc....... Utterchaos
Also remember now you are ment to register your system even if it's private use, it's ment to be registered with the ico, found this out myself after a few long conversation with them, it's all changed where if it's just private then no need they now want everyone registered, but did also say they are at this moment not actively pursuing it but that could quickly change, so just a heads up
NoOne
Thanks guys. I need about 5-15 meters from the camera...what lens size do I need? The kit I linked to in the first post......Its supposed to be "poe". I take it thats the best way to go? I already have an ip camera to keep tabs on the nippers room at night. Foscam. Problem is getting it to record reliably to my network So I think im gonna go for a dedicated unit for the cctv. I had no idea about "ico"...never heard of em. Utterchaos
The independent commissioners office, only for d a Out about it myself when I put up a system at my stable yard, so knew it had to be registered because a business it was when on the phone sorting that I found d out about the change bloody European crap again, but as I was told by three different people they are not "actively" pursuing action to make people register for home use at this moment in time

Hi, have a look at this site, it might give you some idea of the size of lens you need http://www.icode.co.uk/icatcher/help/info/lenses.htm
NoOne
Thanks its a tough decision....Those examples start at 4mm....Im wondering if I need 2.8mm. Is there any way one can simulate the lens size with a digital camera to get an idea of what different lens sizes the cctv will capture?
