jakdos
Really happy to be paying for the 200 meg service and getting.... Download speed: 2.0 MB/s - Queued: 80.0 GB / 81.9 GB This is using SABNZBD to download from EU astraweb, US astraweb & tweaknews (backup account) at the same time with 8 connections to each. The best I've managed is 11MB/s download from Virmins own newserver, but that is few and far between.
rogerbodger
Gotta say im impressed with my virgin speeds. I also have 200mb and most times it exceeds that. Ive just done a test and this is what im getting:
jakdos
Don't get me wrong, I can get test results like that, when when you start doing some serious downloading, the results don't get anywhere close to the speed test. It could be a function of the upload speed at the other end, but I would have thought I could get better from virmins own Usenet servers. daz2905
I think all isp's throttle downloading don't they? I have BT infinity and speedtest at 39mb per second but a bittorent download maxes at 1.6 mb per second. To me it's fast because until about 6 months ago my connection was only 1.5mb anyway. 11mb per second is really fast to me, are you trying to download the entire internet or something
philmein
this is crap speed i've had to put up with for the past 10 years when all the streets around me had fibre. but at long last there fitting a fibre box dow the road wont be long now the extra cash it costs for fibre will be offset by me ditching newsbin and using free torrents
Minty
Ok my end:
daz2905
i know exactly where your coming from Phil. We live in a little village that has been developed and we are on the new estate. Everyone around us was getting fibre or had cable and we were just crawling along. Then they announced we were getting fibre then they said we weren't, i was checking several times per week waiting for news of what was happening until i finally seen the signing up notice. People thought i was nuts when i told them crap internet was wrecking my life but it really does feel like that, especially when you've had kodi installed on every device for years and not able to get involved and use it because of buffering. Even youtube buffered all the time for me. I used a lot of torrents but use less now and if you need any private tracker invites then i have a few for you if you want to pm me. I swear that you guys with 150-200 meg make me jealous as hell and downloading at 11mb would be a dream but for now i'm just grateful for what i've got.
rogerbodger
I dont generally have download problems - if i ftp something i generally hit 20mb/s
jakdos
I'll stop moaning ! I'm stuck with virmin though if I want a decent speed. I can get fibre but the estimate was lower than dsl for some reason - 6 meg. My mum is 50 yd up the road and connected to a different cab and get the full whack on infinity. Think I must have been connected to a cab in Outer Mongolia. Not sure on virmins traffic management - they reckon to only throttle uploads if it is getting abused but download supposed to be fine. I'm on infinity 2 and get roughly 9.2 MB/s download speeds via torrents/newsgroups...which for my connection (78Mb) its about right.
dibberly
i download with astraweb on 200mb and max out my connection most of the time
philmein
With today's announcement about BT openreach being shook up I'm hoping they let third party's use the last mile then I may be able to get the BT 330mb DL and 30ul speed shown as available from my cabinet. It's about a grand installation from BT fuck that I'm not roccafella But the third party's are let in on the act we may get some decent realistic prices. Minty
I have also heard there is a court order out to open reach to do this, and possible being sold to allow this
