daz2905
I bought a cheap one at chritmas from Amazon and will be fitting it this weekend i paid £120 for 4 cameras, recorder and 1tb hardrive. It's well reviewed and looks a bargain but i didn't fancy climbing up a ladder to install the cameras in the winter and been too busy with other stuff to fit it. In terms of cameras, you can't have them overlooking a neighbours property without their consent. I had this issue with one of my neighbours who had one positioned over my garden and i made him move it to a lower position so it only filmed his property. I have cameras at work and wouldn't be without them, just so useful and pretty much every system lets you view on a mobile device. Here's what i bought. daz2905
The camera's have leads, one for power and the other for the picture, quite thin but you will need to drill through walls. My mate has wireless ones but gets loads of interference so i'm happy with cheap wired cameras. Luckily our lounge is long and runs the length of the house so i just need to externall holes and i'll get some cheap trunking from screwfix to keep it all neat and tidy. Tried to edit my post but can't so double posted.
Neoburner
Thanks mate - let me know how that one goes as I saw it myself!
Fon
Id personally avoid the wireless ones, unless your using your own wifi! Had bad problems before, and all you need is next door to stick a microwave on etc, and it drops out. Fon
suke
Have installed several Swann systems now and never had any comebacks. Cables are already made up and come as a kit. This one https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/swann-4channel-2camera-1080p-cctv-kit-swdvk-445502-uk/version.asp?refsource=LDadwords&refsource=Ldadwords&gclid=Cj0KCQjw0PTXBRCGARIsAKNYfG0gd8g75DZuw3MDZfu5W30PFAUnKmwHdjcKA6_-jJ5pg1xg6QcZSlYaAsuHEALw_wcB, comes with 2 cameras 1080p, and picture quality is brilliant. You can add a further two cameras to this if needs be. Night vision is also very good. I guess only downside is you need a 20mm hole throgh the wall to get the connectors through. Other than that everything else is plug and play. You can add the app to your phone and see your cameras from where ever you are. I would definately recommend this sytem
l0gic
I've used an analogue system in the past but the quality of the video was a touch iffy. I binned it a while back and went for a HikVision system, not the cheapest but is IP based with PoE if you wire it back to the recorder. I've taken a different route for power & connection, plug the camera into a convenient place on my network add a 12v supply and PoE converters and supply the cameras that way. Quality is superb. I've a mix of 3K Hikvision cameras and cheapo chinese items. The Hikvision also have local processing and evaluate movement/changes/items in area etc. locally and ping back to the recorder. The cheap cameras are dumb and just send a video stream, but are fine for what I need in some areas. I do block all cameras at the firewall to stop and potential 'phone home' stuff. But logs seem to show only ntp requests which I now serve locally. ATB Kevin
dibberly
ive had 2 swann kits it the past over 3 years and they both gave me false alerts (1 cheaper version, 2nd one was £600ish)....they ended up emailing me every 30secs despite nothing in the picture. Played around with the settings but nothing solved the problems, returned them both Ive just installed hikvision (dont get copies from ebay), great piece of kit and picture quality at night so much better than the swann imho, must better functions and overall quality. Best of it the cameras run on ethernet so its only 1 small cable to each camera you have to route around. Remember cameras are an investment - no point having them if you can see what they are pointing at properly, most cameras are OK in the day...its the night time you need to possibly think about
hoponbaby
I had a Securix kit from Maplin - very similar to the swann kits and it was ok but have since replaced with Hikvision which is on another level. POE so easier on the install but to bring the connector through the wall was still a 16mm hole off memory.
Neoburner
Nice one thanks all! will have a look at hikvision

Snuffs99
Just an alternate option I don't have any outside cameras but as i'm a cheapskate when i go away i use my PC webcam (microshaft lifecam 1080p job) and daughters laptop webcam (shit cam that usually comes with laptops). Installed netcam studio on both PC and laptop and you can watch on your phone etc via the netcam studio app (all free). plus it has movement and audio activation options and sends me a msg to tell me if they are activated and everything is sent to my both my google drive and dropbox accounts as well as being stored on the devices that i use....so if anything is stolen etc i still have the footage. hoponbaby
That's a fair point which tbh I'd never looked at as already had a hole from the old system!
